A simple and clever design for a cabin in Iceland offers a unique experience of the Northern Lights. The motto for the Panorama Glass Lodge states “Where the sky is,” which works as a fitting descriptor for the design of this cozy 248-square-foot vacation cabin. Thanks to the glass panels that wrap around a strategically placed bed, the bright dancing lights of the aurora can be viewed from the most comfortable spot. The rest of the interior includes a full kitchenette, dining table and two chairs, as well as a private bathroom. The cabin is located in Hvalfjörður, Iceland, just a 30-minute drive from Reykjavík, and can only be accessed by car. The area is remote, private, and quiet, making it ideal for viewing the Northern Lights at night, as well as hiking during the day. Once upon a time, in a place far far away, there was a small village where time stood still, a village with a name like the song of the crickets, with a white fortress on a hill, friendly peasants, 300 cows, horses and too many sheep to count. The place of our story is Viscri and here, right in the heart of the village is Prince Charles’ house, a blue roadside cottage guesthouse facing the sun each morning. A carefully renovated Saxon house using traditional methods, materials and local craftsmen and preserving the original carved and painted signatures on the house’s beams. A 1912 reconstruction on a 1700 foundation, furnished with old painted pieces with a few modern twists for extra comfort. Besides the old rooms in the original Johann Dootz old house, the property also features a cottage restaurant build inside the barn with 80 sits and a lovely…

Among the rolling hills of the Italian landscape, between Florence and Siena, through olive groves, is located Castello Uglione. Its more than just a retreat, it’s a place completely concealed from the outside world. Built around the year 1000, it was mentioned in Italian poet Dante Alighieri’s Divine Comedy. A few years ago, it has been fully restored to modern luxury. It is transformed with antiques and brocades, with a mix of mid-century-modern pieces and relaxed objects in an Ibiza style, such as woven-grass lanterns and wooden sculptures. Apfelhotel by noa studio evokes the vintage charm of the historical hotel in South Tyrol, while creating an oasis for the senses and shared moments. Rumah Purnama, which in Bahasa Indonesian means “The House of the Full Moon”, is a 100-year-old Balinese home that Bali-based designer Maximilian Jencquel brought back to life some years ago, thoughtfully renovating and turning it into a holiday retreat. Restored over a period of one year though an adaptive, sustainable design approach, the pagoda-like, two-storey house harmoniously blends in with its natural surroundings thanks to the use of natural materials such as tropical wood and cogongrass, locally known as alang-alang, which lines the thatched roofing. Adding to its mystical, Zen ambience, the house is ceremoniously reached through an overgrown traditional Balinese door that opens onto to a winding garden path leading to a sunken, bamboo-lined pebble garden. The use of natural materials continues in the interior, where a subdued palette of natural woods, earthen wall coloring, marble surfaces and off-white linens imbues the rooms with a soothing, grounded feeling. Complemented by a…
