Potts Point Apartment is endearing because of its curved façade and its historic design. Built in 1951 by Aaron M Bolot on a triangular site, this is an exceptional modernist building that is Heritage Listed in NSW. It has always been a favourite building of Brooke Aitken, so getting to work in it was a gift. Bolot was inspired by 20s deco and many of the original details in the building still remain in the public spaces that show a European finesse and flair.  The brief was to provide the clients with an apartment that referenced the historic nature of the apartment building, but be upgraded to provide a workable kitchen, two bathrooms and a Walk in Robe – all items that were lacking in the original layout. The clients wanted to start afresh with all new furniture, artwork, lighting so it was a complete refurbishment. The studio were looking…

Mavis House is a contemporary and minimal renovation by Altereco Design that transformed a post war brick house into an expansive family home situated in Yarraville. A restrained materials palette reflects the architecture of the project, a meeting of classic and contemporary. A cooling and minimalist palette enriched with solid timber details and a dowel battened screening creates a welcoming series of spaces with a robust and practical seamlessness. The challenging site orientation (north facing the street) has been overcome by creating some separation between old and new. This has allowed for some very tall north facing windows, bringing in winter sun to passively warm the polished concrete floor.Ultimately the design celebrates family life and carefully considers the history of the site and its environmental impact on its surrounding context.(Published with Bowerbird.io). Neil Dusheiko Architects have completed a beautiful and very personal renovation of a Victorian terraced house in Stoke Newington. The house was designed for the architect’s father-in-law, who was selling the family home where he had lived for 45 years. The design adds a new light-filled side extension at ground floor level and a new loft bedroom and bathroom above where there was previously unused roof space. One of the priorities was to make sure that there was plenty of room to display his collection of art and ceramics. The kitchen wall is lined with bespoke, oak shelving, where ceramics and glassware are displayed. Materials were chosen throughout the house to create a warm feel in the new light-filled spaces and to complement the client’s extensive art and ceramic collection. The architects created light space throughout the house for hanging pictures and bespoke wooden joinery for displaying pieces of art. The…

A quaint ‘sticks and stones’ cottage which forms the heart of this family home is situated in a grade two listed site and is set within a concealed location, surrounded by scrub and woodlands. The key challenge for Alter & Company Studio was the modernisation process which involved preserving some of the buildings’ original features, which were removed and restored before being reinserted into the reconfigured interiors. The proposed design sensitively organises the existing farm buildings, enabling an external – internal landscape approach to the otherwise disconnectedness of the farm buildings. The role of play as a modality has also been a key influence that forms a looping internal landscape through which imparts a journey of varying expansive spaces. Alongside this journey, sculptural landmarks were inserted between and into the building, either as a way of contributing to the journey – or diverting it. This approach to design invited a…

The Über Shed 2 is the second rural building Jost Architects have designed on the Mornington Peninsula in Victoria, Australia. The project came about because the client had “a lot of stuff” and needed more space to store it, display it and enjoy it. His collection included vintage cars, WWII army jeeps, model planes, GI Joes, art, old signs, signed guitars, antique tram ticket dispensers etc etc etc. There was an existing off the shelf blue corrugated shed which was only 4 years old with galvanised structural steel still shiny. The problem the client had apart from the need for more room was that he couldn’t get his classic, stainless-steel Airstream bus in due to the access being too low in height and could just not see how keeping the existing shed was going to work. The architects convinced him that they had to keep the existing structure, adapt, re-clad and…

Firewood & Candles is a project that pays elemental homage to a previous life. Rachcoff Vella set out to retain the raw and utilitarian nature of an agricultural building balanced with calm tones of a main ridge dawn. The building envelope of concrete block walls retain the raw agricultural nature of the former dairy. The insertions within this envelope are joinery and furniture which are of a hand-made nature and are offset with a homogenous wash of calm muted grey tone stains and paints applied to re-used and reclaimed timbers. An intentional approach to reminisce about the rawness and beauty of a previous quintessential Australian architectural typology.Nestled within the occupants are wrapped up by the soft internal underbelly, firewood burning alight, this inconspicuous outbuilding glows like a candle flickering in the distant winter mist.Interior elements are layered against the more structured, utilizing natural colours and textures as seen in the clay,…
