The clients of Searl Lamaster Howe Architects had searched five years across four states to find a site for their weekend home that spoke to them. This retreat was to be everything that their Chicago residence – a lofted space nestled within the attic trusses of a converted church – was not. The loft is in the heart of the bustling Wicker Park neighborhood; they sought serenity and a slower pace. The loft features a highly curated collection of sleek European contemporary furnishings; they were inspired by the idea of a sanctuary with a modern sensibility but also rooted in its place with hand craftsmanship felt on scales big and small. The loft’s views of the downtown skyline are finely calibrated to maintain a sense of privacy in the dense neighborhood; they sought an abundance of transparency and a direct connection to nature. Apart from the exterior which is defined by…

The approach for the renovation and extension of the Hopetoun Road Residence by B.E Architecture, was to retain the existing structure as an anchoring element, by adding a series of pavilions underneath a floating copper roofline that wraps around the original building. Embracing the client’s desire to maintain a relatively conventional residential structure, the design strengthens the form by creating a gable façade at the front and back with a clearly defined outline. Clad in polished grey render, the gables emphasise solidity and give the house a re-established sense of history and permanence. The tension and balance between old and new are carried into the interiors of the house. The existing structure maintains the intimate qualities of the original house with a series of crafted details. The new areas, made primarily from glass, are open to the green landscape beyond. The prominent use of steel-framed windows is a unifying element…

This breath taking Montana home was designed by Lisa Kanning Interior Design. The house is positioned on the 160-acre site in the Yellowstone Club and offers outstanding views on the Spanish Peaks. The exterior of the house has a ranch-inspired look with reclaimed hewn siding from Montana Reclaimed Lumber and a low-slung roof. Concerning the interior, the owner wanted a design that mixes up rustic and modern elements in a space that’s as welcoming as it is beautiful. To make this happen, Lisa incorporated typical Western materials, applied in both conventional and uncommon ways. The West is a richly textured place, so instead of adopting the typical tricks that define high-country design, the design team played up the materials and colors that define life here and the result is a home that feels layered and comfortable. Bryant Alsop has responded to their client’s desire for a bold, heroic design, while avoiding opulence. The home is a sculptural vessel with spaces for family and friends to gather. For the new owner, purchasing the property from a family friend meant the Victorian house came imbued with memories. A sense of ‘layering’ of families, childhoods and recollections plays strongly through the design. The existing dwelling was restored with the formality and vertical language of Victorian buildings used to inform a dialogue between existing and contemporary forms where the scale of new spaces are proportionate with the original house. The singular form of the extension is defined by the rhythm and repetition of curved elements that are used as simple, broad sweeping gestures. Hard materials are tempered by soft shapes to create enveloping spaces, while the backyard is celebrated with a garden that will evolve with the family over time.…

Detail 9 Architects Studio client’s brief for this project was essentially to create a ‘lock and leave’ weekend retreat that would sit quietly within it’s idyllic bush setting. With such a simple set of requirements, the home was designed as a comfortable and low maintenance retreat for the owners throughout the year with the ability to easily expand and accommodate friends and relatives when needed. Cut into the hillside, and designed as three separate pavilions connected by glass linkways the dwelling uses earthy tones and materials to delineate each pavilion as living or sleeping space. Simple roof forms are used to effectively capture rainwater which is used throughout the home and garden. The open deck links each of the pavilions and enables the home to be opened up to a generous platform providing the perfect space to stretch out and enjoy the great outdoors. Collaborating with clients, interior designer Mardi…

The apartment by One More Buro, belongs to a mid 30s couple working in artistic and business environments who wanted to save the unique atmosphere of the historical building their flat is situated in. However, they still wanted to add some modern vibe which would cohere with their personalities and the dynamic lifestyle they both lead. The main idea was to fully enjoy the space the owners had acquired without obviously dividing it into rooms what gave them more freedom in defining functions of different corners. So they aimed to highlight openness of the space and absence of too many details as well as to give full freedom of movement to the couple in their daily routine. The zones look as they were flowing into each other uniting into one wholesome space while also meeting the owners’ needs. One of the principles was also visual and functional simplicity of the space along with…

This interior renovation by Scrafano Architects, unifies four existing lofts into one large open living space on three different levels. The architect located the kitchen/eating area in the center of the space to create a central social gathering and communal area. Fireplaces are used as focal points to mark both ends of the L-shaped living space. Built-in shelves and cabinetry separate interior rooms while simultaneously connecting spaces and storing the owners’ large book collection and travel treasures. The bedrooms, bathrooms, and offices are tucked upstairs under the building’s original wood ceiling. New, cantilevered metal grate floors with open rails increase the upper level live/work area and allow light to filter to the spaces be The studio collaborated with Douglas Hoerr Landscape Architects to transform a West Loop loft roof space into something inviting, lush and comfortable. Treating the space as an outdoor family room, the roof deck expands the living…

A sense of Parisian elegance and grandeur permeates this sweeping five-bedroom apartment in St Johns Wood. It occupies a rare corner position on the third floor of Neville Court, overlooking The Beatles’ Abbey Road crossing. The apartment has been the subject of a passionate and comprehensive restoration by the current owners. Cornicing has been reconditioned, floors replaced with French oak, and bespoke joinery has been finished by a team of Italian craftsmen. There are a remarkable 25 windows throughout the apartment allowing varying light to penetrate almost every corner. In response, a subtle palette has been chosen to shift from one space to another, creating excellent plays on colour when looking through rooms and corridors to neighbouring spaces. Choosing a bright yellow shade for the walls and ceiling of the living room is quite unexpected for a Scandinavian designer. We must say though that it looks very interesting as a background colour for beautiful furniture and objects. You can’t help noticing that there are also some more bold colors used for the rest of the apartment which make it one of its kind. Enjoy it!!!!
