Reitarska is an apartment located in the center of Kiev designed by Emil Dervish. In its original state, the interior consisted of three separate rooms connected by a long and dark hallway, and after Emil’s intervention, it became a studio full of light and very cleverly designed and conceived floor plan. When furnishing the interior, antique Soviet furniture was used, which goes well with the neutral color palette and natural materials such as brass and wood that were used in the space itself. Of the cult designer pieces, we can notice the beautiful Standard dining chairs by designer Jean Prouvé or the Bellevue wall lamp in the bedroom, designed by Arne Jacobsen in 1929. The Courtyard Warehouse is a private residence in the shell of a former trouser factory, built in 1909, in the Inner West of Sydney.  The rich and eclectic interiors pay homage to previous uses and occupants whilst sympathetically weaving in the identity of the current owners. The brief by Josephine Hurley Architecture was to create a private sanctuary where the owners could relax, entertain and enjoy family life.  They wanted a family friendly home but not at the expense of sophistication.  The existing interior was an eclectic mix of architectural styles from classical columns to decorative friezes, mixed with stained glass windows and all contained in the shell of a warehouse.  The building was in need of some big gestures to improve the comfort of the owners. Thermal performance and natural lighting was poor, amenities required upgrading and the structure needed rectification.  The design focuses on revealing the core structure,…

The most magical moment of this townhouse renovation by Shapeless Studio was early on, when dozens of layers of paint were stripped from the three original fireplace mantels, and a gorgeous green and pink slate was uncovered. Elegant and casual, this stone became the inspiration for the jewel-tone color palette throughout: deep greens, dusty pinks, and cool grays were woven through each room. The original door casings and Victorian-era door hardware all featured plant motifs, so natural plant elements were incorporated into the space, especially in the vibrant wallpaper in the powder room. The furnishings were all chosen to complement the architecture of the home, and implemented rich colors and textures, and simple forms. This large Grade II listed apartment block in Marylebone was built in 1928 and forms part of the Howard de Walden Estate. Nash Baker Architects were commissioned to undertake a complete refurbishment of one of the fourth floor apartments that involved reconfiguring the use of space whilst retaining all the original joinery and plasterwork. Although the apartment is generously proportioned, it was completely un-modernised, lacking even the most basic services and also had a very small kitchen. To complicate matters, the steel and concrete frame of the building made the installation of new services almost impossible. We worked closely with the council’s conservation officer and the freeholder, and were able to take up areas of the floor screed. The kitchen was relocated into the old library, opening up the available space to incorporate a dining area which when the sliding doors are drawn back, connects the new kitchen/dining area to…

A complete refurbishment was needed to refresh a dated 90s interior to suit the style of a more contemporary owner. Relocating the front door and staircase enabled Stiff + Trevillion Studio to reduce the amount of circulation space needed, increasing usable space, and introducing daylight into the middle of a deep plan. The refurbished property celebrates the flexibility, and industrial style that are the essence of mews buildings in a contemporary way ( Published with Bowerbird). Α cozy Scandinavian apartment with a lot of contrasts. It has got a very unusual layout with a walk-through room without windows, in which the designers arranged a home office. You can’t help but notice that the walls in it are painted black which adds twist to the rest of the rooms, because the space is viewed from different angles. The rest of the decor is in natural, warm tones which add warmth and coziness to the apartment !!!! Photography : Alen Coric See also : https://house-diaries.com/modern-apartment-in-black-tones/

Having been a finalist in the Australian Sustainability Awards 2016 and a winner in the BDAV Awards 2016, this project is a great example for Melbourne Design Studios’ adaptability and creativity : Given a brief for contemporary new residences for a development, the team also took on the dilapidated heritage home on the allotment, transforming it into ‘Waltham Jewel’, one of Richmond’s finest homes. MDS director Marc Bernstein’s plan for the Victorian-era home took the developers on an unexpected journey: “The home was initially a leftover piece of the equation that the developers just weren’t really interested in. Ultimately, they were amazed by what we made of the house and that it could actually be, not only commercially attractive, but also a really beautiful piece of architecture.” The scheme has been designed to respect the house’s original heritage character while introducing a contemporary edge and ample natural light. Each room…

These original single fronted Victorian terraces in the neighbourhood of Brunswick while different in style, are otherwise similar in their scale, materials, and setback. This street, comprises an attached row of five Victorian brick single storey houses. The brief to SWG STUDIO was to renovate and restore the existing main building including the original outbuilding laundry and WC as well as extending the footprint of the non-original rear part. Also to enlarge the kitchen area and make it more functional and create a substantial amount of storage. Tim Sullivan of HomeLab and Elissa Scrafano of Scrafano Architects just completed this stunning vacation home in Colorado. It’s an off-the-grid back country modernist cabin with three connecting structures inspired by mining rustic chic architecture. It was built at 12,000 feet elevation so everything had to brought up by a Sno-Cat or helicopter. The residence is nestled at the tree line and opens to 360 views of the Telluride mountains. The materials used include reclaimed wood, corrugated metal panels, standing seam metal roofing, and local stone––and it’s solar powered!(Published with Bowerbird).
