Wallace Neff was the man who shaped the idea of what movie-star life looked like. He’s the architect who built mansions for Mary Pickford and Douglas Fairbanks, Cary Grant, Charlie Chaplin, and more. Hancock Park in central Los Angeles is a neighbourhood known for its distinctive 1920s residences and its famous inhabitants that include past and present Hollywood stars and other celebrities. Neff took his inspiration for this French neoclassical-style house, built in 1960 in Hancock Park, from the famous Claude-Nicolas Ledoux-designed Pavilion de Louveciennes, constructed in the late 17th century. The house was grandiose, fussy and over-decorated so designer Christos Prevezanos of Studio Preveza assisted with modernizing and lightening up the atmosphere. The original property contained some Arts and Crafts influenced decorative aspects, which the owners were keen to retain and highlight, while introducing contemporary interventions. The main feature, a double height library space at the heart of the house designed by Platform 5 Architects , was created by combining the original rear reception room and a first floor bedroom. The feature staircase, wrapped in oak bookshelves, leads up to a built-in desk and study area with views over the ground floor. To the rear of the house, a side extension to the existing kitchen was formed by resting an oak rib and skin structure, externally clad in zinc, onto the brick party wall. A cosy seating area with slide-away corner glazing creates a space where you feel surrounded by the garden. That is not an issue for Kelly Hohla since through travel, experience, and education she has developed a love for many forms of design ranging from contemporary eclectic mixes, to classic architecture with fresh updates. All of her interiors, whether contemporary or traditional, focus on attention to fine details and craftsmanship, proportion, space and light, well-edited forms and materials, high style, tailored comfort, and a little unexpected edge. Curated color and comfort here is a clear focus on attention to fine detail, proportion-space and light with well edited materials. Known as Kilnwood, the property is located on the edge of the Mendip Hills with an extensive view overlooking Glastonbury Tor.
