Among the rolling hills of the Italian landscape, between Florence and Siena, through olive groves, is located Castello Uglione. Its more than just a retreat, it’s a place completely concealed from the outside world. Built around the year 1000, it was mentioned in Italian poet Dante Alighieri’s Divine Comedy. A few years ago, it has been fully restored to modern luxury. It is transformed with antiques and brocades, with a mix of mid-century-modern pieces and relaxed objects in an Ibiza style, such as woven-grass lanterns and wooden sculptures. As a contemporary interpretation of the historical townhouse typology, Hornsby Residence by Conrad Architects utilises restraint and control to create a highly ordered sequence of spatial experiences.Respectfully inspired by the great townhouses of the world – from the Georgian architecture of Bath, to the Neo-classicism of London; this home embodies a sense of solidarity, respect and refinement, distilling the enduring qualities of these classic typologies and reimagining them in a contemporary manner. This modern interpretation carries the concept of the colonnade from the architecture to the interiors. French doors evoke a sense of luxury, order and sanctuary upon entrance; a careful design consideration that is further enhanced by a restrained interior palette of marble and natural oak.Responding to the diverse requirements of each room, varying ceiling heights, floor levels, lighting fixtures and windows are employed to create unique spatial qualities. For example, the formal living room utilises the symmetry of…

Apfelhotel by noa studio evokes the vintage charm of the historical hotel in South Tyrol, while creating an oasis for the senses and shared moments. For the expansion of the Apfelhotel, 18 new suites were built for guests and carefully designed to fit into the farmyard’s landscape structure, while complementing the rural surroundings. A special emphasis was placed on preserving the characteristic of the farmhouse ensemble and maintaining its scale. As the central masterpiece of this rural development, NOA designed a wellness area with architecture and greenery that resemble a modern lush garden. Outside, the frost has seriously bitten into the tree branches. The sun sparkles in the fresh snow and against the clear sky the white smoke from the chimneys stands out. Once inside the doors of Anna Truelsen, we are greeted by stove heat, lit candles and the smell of freshly grilled ham. Anna works as a stylist and lives in a country house from the 1930s with her husband Michael and two sons. The family has lived in the house for 12 years, and during this time has slowly but surely renovated room by room. And if there is something that characterizes the old house, it is charm. Especially now, before Christmas, when creative Anna has rolled up her sleeves and styled her own home. Enjoy the tour!!!! Yana Prydalna designed a private villa in San Francisco, California, USA. The designer named it “Golden Villa” because the whole interior color has an artistic conception of Golden autumn breath, which embodies the exquisite wabi-sabi aesthetics of the East. The designer used light-colored objects, including polished concrete and a decorative plaster interior. There are also lightweight textiles, which create a lightness and complexity in this style. Besides, wood and wicker lamps are still the most important.。 See also :https://house-diaries.com/typeo-loft-a-relaxing-swedish-retreat/

This renovation and addition to a 1920’s era bungalow is the story of the stewardship of an existing resource from a state of aging into a “second life,” blending tradition and modernity in form and detail. Sagging structural elements and a cascade of subsequent incremental failures such as leaking window heads and walls out-of-plumb necessitated the removal of the roof and second floor. Although doubling the square footage of the house, the goal of Gardner Architects LLC Studio was to avoid “mansionization” and preserve the original intimate character of the house. A garden addition and new second floor were configured under a new form-hugging roof that kept the original bungalow character, yet blended with the asian-modern sensibility that guided the design. The front of the house preserves the bungalow character while hinting at the modern transformation on the garden side. A series of cross axes from front to rear provides…

Oak Hill Modern #2 is the second in a series of modern home ranch conversions designed and built by rootARCH.The original 1-story ranch home prior to renovation was a modest size of 2 bedrooms and 2 baths, approximately 1,800 sf. It is located in a very desirable area of Nashville inside an older satellite city area named Oak Hill. It hosts a diverse architectural population of older established homes ranging in size and affluence including the private homes of country music stars and the governor of Tennessee.Obvious and constant visual connections to the outdoors were an important consideration in many of the indoor spaces to allow the home to be opened to expand the livable areas. The natural light that floods the home at different times of the day dramatically transforms the mood throughout the day. Brick from the original home was reused along with the introduction of new modern elements…

The strength of this 85 m² apartment in Brazil is in the naturality of materials and its efficient and functional aesthetic. The design, by Atelier Aberto Arquitetura and Sbardelotto Arquitetura, doesn’t take over the space. Despite the textures on the walls, there are opportunities for the clients to put their own personality into their home, by filling it with works of art, carpets, and furniture. Reasonably fragmented, the property previously did not present much natural light. After the renovation, the kitchen, assembled with the laundry area, gained a window and today has a great connection with the living area. A fair part of the success of these interventions resides on the project’s functional partitions, with custom cabinets that separate the areas, working as multifunctional walls that can also be used as storage. For example, the gray cabinet that separates the kitchen from the laundry room, the master bedroom’s wardrobe that…

This atypical home might bring to mind an old-fashioned shopkeeper living above their workplace, but this home and client are anything but old-fashioned. Working closely with the client, Dick Clark + Associates Studio helped realize her vision for transforming a 1977 office building into an updated model of live-work. Along the trails of Shoal Creek in Austin, TX sits this industrial residence above an antique furniture store and design workshop. The brief was to take an old and dated office building and stripping the existing stucco off of the building and opening it up to create a retail location for furniture and a design studio, with the upper level being converted to a single family residence above so the family could live above where the wife works. The design approach revealed the building’s latent structural system and surfaced a raw aesthetic complimented by large warehouse style windows and a warm…

This project restores and reimagines the 8th and 9th floors of a vintage Philip Maher apartment building at 1301 North Astor Street into a contemporary living space for a family of four. The home is a reflection of the character and sophistication of the clients, art collectors and avid travelers, as well as their family-oriented lifestyle. The design, by von Weise Associates, balances restoration of certain details and spaces to the existing art deco character, such as the formal living and dining room, while creating new circulation and larger spaces around the 8th floor, as a reflection of a more informal lifestyle. The entrance hall has been expanded as a public gallery and entertaining space that extends the original entrance through the whole building east to west, capturing natural light on both sides. The new stair anchors one side of the gallery while letting light pass through its open design,…
