In the Urban Farmhouse, careful consideration of the architectural past was taken by Post Architecture Inc. to re-imagine a century old farmhouse as a contemporary home re-built on the site where it stood since the 1800’s.Situated in Toronto’s Bennington Heights neighbourhood, the property is adjacent to the scenic Beltline Trail and creek, where trains used to once travel in the late 1800’s. The existing farmhouse was a 2-storey, balloon framed structure clad in white ship lap siding. The Owners wanted to renovate and expand the house but it was in too poor a condition to be maintained so the decision was made to take it down and build new, keeping the same footprint and honouring the history of the site.  The material palette was an important tool used to evoke the farmhouse feeling. Natural oak flooring, and matching oak millwork, were used throughout to add warmth and texture, as some…

When two sister in-law dentists went to Reena Sotropa In House Design Group studio they were in need of a major overhaul to transform an outdated dental office space they had just purchased. Their clinic, Destination Dental, is not your average dental practice, it is also a wellness spa! Specializing in both dentistry services as well as cosmetics, dermaplaning, massages, and more. This unique concept called for a space that was just as unique and luxurious! When the clients approached the studio, all they had was a branding package consisting of mint and hunter green tones with brass accents. With this in mind, designers brainstormed and developed a space that completely captured a feeling that was aligned with their pre-existing look for their brand’s graphics. Otmar fell in love with this region of the Italian Alps as a child, when he went here every year to visit his grandmother on the family farm during the summer holidays. The local beauty and unsurpassed nature not least inspired him to become a designer and artist. And so, many years after his first visit, he bought an old traditional house in these parts to create his ideal mountain retreat. And although the cottage is very different from most local buildings with its minimalist appearance and modern design, for Otmar this is the best place on earth! Built in 1956, this TechBuilt home was constructed from a “kit of parts” designed by the architect Carl Koch, an early pioneer of modernism and prefabrication. While the “bones” were lovely, the home needed many upgrades. Hisel Flynn Architects were pleased to imagine a reconfiguration that works entirely within the home’s original footprint and without major impacts on the home’s exterior, holding true to Koch’s initial vision that the home could adapt over time to suit new needs. You walk into that house and immediately see these huge high ceilings and this beautiful old cornicing that has been painted over so many times you can’t really decipher what it would have originally been, but it still looks wonderful. The floorboards, the marble fireplace, the view out onto the garden – all of that was there and amazing.  The owner set about creating relaxed, neutral living spaces that would complement the existing period features perfectly. Located in the noble neighborhood of Jardins in São Paulo, this apartment by meireles pavan arquitetura had as its main concept the use of exclusive and rustic materials bringing a modern result and at the same time comfortable for owners and guests. In the entrance hall an art gallery was created where the main protagonist was the marble Ceppo di Gre, used for the first time in Brazil, both on the floor and on the ceiling, bringing a sensation to the visitor of entering in a “cave”. To compose, the pivoting doors are coated in natural banana straw. For the appreciation of the art works, were used easels by Lina Bo Bardi, the Italian Brazilian architect responsible for one of the most important projects in the city, MASP (São Paulo Art Museum). During the length of the apartment, there is a delicate wooden of dyed European oak lining to give prominence…

In this 60 year-old walk-up apartment in Singapore, ASOLIDPLAN Studio embraced the structural constraints of obstructive columns by wrapping a marble dining table around them, creating a social space on which the family life is a anchored. The clients are a young couple with a tasteful collection of furniture and objects who wanted to continue their tradition of regular family gatherings at home. The designers’ insertion of the dining table around the columns allows an articulated social space flanked by the kitchen on one side and the living room and balcony on the other. The private spaces are neatly tucked away into the corners, away from the main gathering space. Taking cues from the mid-century modernist design contemporaneous with the architecture of the apartment, designers wanted to explore how this design trend can still be applied to today’s requirements. They softened the very strong boxy shape of the apartment by…
