Renato D’Ettorre Architects’ client became weary of staying in hotels, so decided to purchase a top floor apartment in the heart of Sydney. The refurbishment of this generously proportioned apartment frees up the spaces from the constraints of an outdated interior and re-imagines them in a way that admits no compromise. The interior was given a new lease of life by being stripped back to the structure for a new order of purity, clarity of volumes and integrated new lighting. Incorporating varied illumination techniques allowed selected walls to recede softly into the background rather than dominating the foreground, rendering tranquil spaces capable of soothing one’s frame of mind. The spatial arrangement is designed with flow and continuity, which is enhanced by deliberately limiting the materials, detail and colour scheme. Colours are reduced to charcoal grey and white satin to soften spaces to ensure a serene atmosphere free of sharp reflection.…

Newtown House delicately preserves an emotional connection to an existing house, while enhancing the house’s connection to its site. Originally belonging to one of the client’s parents, nostalgia and fondness for the old house needed to be considered when bringing the house up to the standards and requirements of modern life. On a remote mountain field in the rugged north of Ibiza lies this beautiful island home. What formerly served as a workshop and storage, has now been turned into a contemporary dream house. The owner of Ibiza Interiors and the Nieuw developed this 100 year old warehouse into a design guesthouse and showcase project. When interior architect Jurjen van Hulzen saw the structure and location of the building, the concept for the design was born. Concrete columns and steel beams were carrying a typical Ibizan ‘sabina beam’ roof. A mix of the industrial structure combined with the rustic roof formed the concept for the rest of the design: an interesting play and contrast between rustic and industrial. The site is a one acre, narrow slice of hillside just blocks above bustling South Congress Ave with tree top views of downtown. Rocks and native vegetation envelope the property, consistent with the casual, un-manicured character of its neighborhood. Tim Cuppett Architects Studio solves simultaneously the response to site and client: he, a musician who wanted a modern box with views to downtown and she, a yoga practicing mid-wife who wanted a barn with animals, the solution embraces and exploits the depth and slope of the land. From street level, one climbs a stair through a stone plinth to an elevated terrace captured by the house, screened porch and a grove of Live Oaks. Logistics of this New Orleans based, working family (homeowners) required them to be home indoors for long periods, which in addition to work and school became disruptive to their wellness. They began to contemplate, like many families, whether a move to the suburbs, exchanging proximity to great citywide amenities for a larger backyard to increase outdoor access was necessary. Rather than moving far away, they decided to build a new house that would reconsider the limitations of indoor home life on a small urban lot. The organizing principle of the project by Nathan Fell Architecture was to create as much outdoor access from communal areas as possible. The Brighton Colour Interior project is the furnishing of a large contemporary residence located in Brighton, Victoria by Molecule Studio. Designer Anja de Spa’s brief was to combine an existing eclectic collection of furniture and artwork with a series of new furniture pieces – with the intention of reinvigorating the family home.The design response is centred on a vibrant colour story of blue, reds, mauve and mustard. Bold colour tones for new contemporary furniture pieces work to connect the different living spaces in the home. The place, designed by One More Buro, belongs to a young couple with a dog who used to work in the design and architecture fields. They have both slightly shifted emphasis in their career paths now working in IT and being a young designer of clothes. Thus the apartment represents opposite personalities they both possess combining a tendency for enthusiasm and activity, a thirst for movement and travel with a desire for solitude, tranquility and the ability to concentrate at work. The main principle the couple insisted on is making use of maximum space in the apartment, and at the same time, adding specific functionality to each of its corners. This warehouse conversion by Josephine Hurley Architecture Studio, is in one of Sydney’s most recognised heritage buildings, the distinctive Edwards & Co. building. The building is wedged into a narrow street in the fast regenerating inner-city suburb of Surry Hills. Formerly a tea factory in the 1920s and more recently an advertising agency, the brief was to breathe new life into the 300-square-metre space as a private residence that spans two levels. Level 6 with the iconic arched windows was completely gutted and the former caretaker’s office was demolished and replaced with a guest retreat on the roof, located behind the emblazoned parapet. The client brief focused heavily on the notions of comfort, practicality and respect for the building. A very unique person walked into XS Studio for compact design studio. He told them that he worked selling spices – which immediately sparked their imagination. They were asked to design an apartment in a new, white high-rise for a person whose daily occupation involved matter, smells, and colors. A person with deep roots, broad intellectual knowledge, and a passion for arts and culture, whose daily occupation and livelihood are down-to-earth and sensual by nature.
