This project by Alicia Holgar involved the refurbishment and redecoration of a private apartment in Brisbane City. Located within an iconic Harry Seidler building, the refresh sought to extend and evolve fluid form and function with a European aesthetic, Australian ethic and art as an integrated expression of ingenuity. Echoing Seidler’s sentiments within the architecture, form & function evolved through a play on curves, cantilevers, materiality & art as an integrated expression of ingenuity. Avian Apartment is a home of connected balance, both within its encompassing walls and to the architectural intent that houses them. From its curated contents to the custom wall murals by LA artist Jessalyn Brooks called ‘The Avians’ (in refence to the outlook over the city skyline) a sense of balance prevails. Ali Holgar Interior Design has brought both liveliness and calm to the space and, through an understanding and appreciation of its architectural context, has…
The Allis Residence by In Design International is intended to be an expression of those who dwell there. It’s layered, robust, minimalist, elegantly understated and subtly flows from one space to another, connecting the accumulated personality of the family yet remaining true to individuals. A new build mansion with strong contemporary lines required decoration & design tactics that navigated the contradictions of hard and soft, serious and playful, monumental and domestic. The detailed approach to designing & decorating this home found the synergy between these elements to create a modern, striking yet comfortably beautiful home.Through clever use of architectural forms and thoughtful material choices the home is filled with hard finishes which appear soft, fixed materials which appear to move and solid materials which appear to float. Throughout the house, aesthetic components harness the elements of nature and humanise the monumentality of the house. ( Published with BowerBird ) Project…

One of Studio Puisto’s designs stands in a coniferous forest in Rovaniemi, the capital of Lapland. Emma Johansson and co-designers got the assignment to design the Arctic TreeHouse Hotel in August 2015. The next year in November, the unique luxury hotel with treetop views opened on the Arctic Circle. The inspiration for the accommodation concept – set on a steep natural slope – came from Nordic nature and culture as well as the magical world of SantaPark. A vision started to form: small individual accommodation buildings set in nature, their spirit highlighting characteristics of the area and creating an optimal setting for experiencing both nature and arctic mysticism. The suites that stand on stilts draw inspiration from a classic Finnish toy, “käpylehmä,” meaning pine cone cow. All suites have window walls facing north for viewing the Northern Lights and the surrounding forest in comfort. The wooden hotel won the first prize…
The project circumnavigates a local planning restriction by building a half-height roof extension! The clients owned the existing two-storey, two-bedroom property, located on a central London Housing Estate. With a second baby on the way, they needed more space. Priced out of three-bedroom properties in the area they decided to investigate what could be done to create more space in their existing home. The challenge with this property, unlike others on the estate, was that they were unable to secure planning permission for a single-storey loft extension. They received two planning refusals since they were not permitted to build any higher than the highest point of the existing roof, due to its lower profile. Bradley Van Der Straeten Studio approached the design as an interlocking jigsaw. They knew the half-height of the loft was fixed so the design was all about creating two interlocking floor levels in the space of one and…
The client, a single 40 year-old Greek who’s deeply involved in the artsy world, has lived in Brazil for almost 8 years and requested the Atelier PECLAT+CHOW to completely renovate a 1960’s apartment located in the trendy neighborhood of Jardins, in São Paulo. The apartment hasn’t been restored in over 50 years, in that way they proposed a completely different layout. As one enters the apartment one sees itself surrounded by walls and doors wrapped in brushed walnut paneling, as one walks towards the living space you perceive at its heart a floating wooden monolith which seems to have been detached from the entrance hall. This volume embodies the space with a sense of permanence and also acts as an invisible separation between the kitchen and the living room. The old three bedrooms and one bathroom apartment were converted into a two ensuite bedroom with generous space. This was only possible…
This is the apartment of Arseniy Borisenko the architect of the za bor architects. He’s been searching for an unusual apartment for a long time, considering constructivist homes, stalinkas and other non-trivial options, avoiding only new buildings. The search took long but in the end, the architect was lucky to find a very unusual apartment in the historical district of Moscow beside the river, with old buildings and small gardens. In fact it was a former communal flat in a terrible state (no repair for more than 60 years!), but since Arseniy originally planned to rejust everything for himself, this fact did not bother him. The property repair took a little more than six months. Everything from pipes to floors were replaced. The main feature of the apartment are the historic arched vaults up to 4.5 meters high. They had remained since the time when this house was part of the…
In one of Gothenburg’ s charming 19th century houses we find this nice and pleasant apartment. The apartment, which was on the market by Stadshem, has a social layout where the spacious living room is in file with the kitchen, which a few years ago came in third place in the magazine Sköna Hem’s competition “Kitchen of the Year”. Here, the light flows through high windows in vaulted niches, and the generous ceiling height creates a wonderfully airy atmosphere. Preserved original carpentry such as roof rosettes, mirror panels and high footprints provide a beautiful setting. The bedroom is quiet, and from here you reach a balcony where you enjoy the south sun and the courtyard in the middle of town. Have a look!!!! Photo: Janne Olander
Valley House is a 580 meter construction by L G Architecture, built on a 5,000 square meter lot in a gated community called Valle Santana in Valle de Bravo. The lot has a complex surface, with a 35% incline which makes construction a challenge but provides a grand view. The house is placed on the highest part of the terrain and is built downwards alongside the land. The design is made up of modules that are connected by glass bridges that merge with the surrounding nature. The main entrance is placed in the central volume that surrounds a grand tree with a view of the valley that astonishes each visitor. With complete respect for the abundant vegetation, the designer created this project in coexistence with the endemic surrounding. A water mirror is created at the main entrance – a four-meter-high, flat-roofed central volume – which transforms into two streams that surround…
Surrounded by uncompromised views of the picturesque Gawdy Hall Estate and a 15th-century church, ‘Ivywood Cottage’ invokes a calm, restorative and enduring connection to its idyllic countryside location. Working within the bones of an existing Medieval build, it has been reimagined with luxurious warmth and thoughtful sensory experiences by studio Gabrielle. Drawing from the rich tonal beauty of the rural setting, organic surfaces such as natural plaster and warm timber are offset by fine metal detailing and tactile textiles, completing the manifestation of understated luxury. You can book this stylish, rural retreat here!!!
An ambitiously refurbished turn of the century apartment by Alvhem, where everything has gone through to the smallest detail. Bright board floor, kitchen with wood stove from 1884 and circular floor plan. Wood stove and tiled stove that works, 310 cm ceiling height, large south balcony in the highest position towards large and open courtyard. The rooms are basically classic with plentiful stucco molding and high skirting boards, but the furniture and decor in the apartment are selected in an elegant modern style. A great option for housing in a luxurious old house! Photography : Anders Bergstedt
